The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) resumed its September session in Arusha after a funding break. Judges are working to clear a backlog of over 260 cases by October 11. The First Instance Division Court has a majority of cases from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The session, lasting until October 11, will address 25 cases, including opposition leader Martha Karua’s challenge of the 2022 Kenyan election outcome. Other cases involve disputes between DR Congo and Rwanda, as well as former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s impeachment petition.
The court is currently understaffed and requires three new judges from Kenya, South Sudan, and Somalia. Steps are being taken to fill these vacancies at the next Summit of Heads of State in November 2024.
