Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, is calling for the accelerated resettlement of Rohingya refugees to third countries amidst ongoing civil war in Myanmar. With nearly one million Rohingya currently living in Bangladesh after fleeing violence in Myanmar, Yunus is urging international efforts to support these refugees.
Yunus, an acclaimed economist, took office promising reforms and increased international engagement. While his government’s stance on the Rohingya crisis remains to be seen, Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting the refugees in his first policy address.
The EU has pledged support for Yunus’ administration, allocating funds for humanitarian assistance in Bangladesh. Despite challenges in large-scale repatriation, efforts to engage with ethnic militias in Myanmar like the Arakan Army could improve conditions for Rohingya.
As Bangladesh looks towards ASEAN for support, the focus remains on the eventual safe return of Rohingya to Myanmar when conditions allow. Despite the hurdles, Yunus and his government are determined to work towards a viable solution for the Rohingya crisis.
