US Pledges Support to Venezuelan Opposition Leaders, Blinken Reiterates
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the United States’ commitment to Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia during a recent telephone conversation. Blinken praised their courage and dedication to democratic values amidst harsh conditions in Venezuela. The US government will continue to support the restoration of democratic freedoms in the country and hold Nicolás Maduro and his officials accountable for their actions.
The opposition’s claim of electoral fraud in Venezuela’s presidential elections led to protests, arrests, and asylum requests. In response, Washington imposed sanctions on Venezuelan officials. The Venezuelan government, however, rejected Blinken’s support and defended Maduro’s presidency. Prosecutors in Buenos Aires requested an arrest warrant for Maduro and other officials accused of human rights violations, seeking universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity.
Despite the challenges, the US remains dedicated to supporting Venezuelan opposition leaders and promoting democracy in the country.
