The Wall Street Journal reported that roughly 1 million Ukrainians and Russians have been killed or wounded in Moscow’s war against Ukraine. Despite limited disclosure from Kyiv and Moscow, confidential estimates suggest Kyiv’s losses at 80,000 soldiers killed and 400,000 wounded, while Russia’s losses could be as high as 200,000 dead and 400,000 wounded.
President Zelensky cited a lower number of military fatalities, while leaked Pentagon documents hint at even more severe Russian losses. Both nations have made efforts to replenish their military ranks, with Kyiv adopting new legislation for conscription and Russia carrying out partial mobilizations.
The war has resulted in a demographic shock for both countries, displacing millions. An estimated 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced, with about 6.5 million fleeing abroad. Additionally, 650,000 Russians have permanently relocated abroad due to fears of conscription or opposition to the war.
The long-standing conflict has taken a toll on both nations, highlighting the devastating human cost of the ongoing war.
