In response to the current monkeypox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy, along with officials from the National Security Council, hosted a roundtable policy discussion to address the potential ramifications of the outbreak. The focus of the meeting was on containing the clade I strain of monkeypox, which is endemic in the DRC. The Biden-Harris administration has declared global monkeypox response and domestic preparedness as top priorities.
With more than 27,000 suspected cases and over 1,300 deaths reported as of September 2024, the meeting at the White House analyzed preventive measures and proactive planning in case the outbreak expands beyond Africa. The World Health Organization has already declared the monkeypox outbreak in the DRC as a public health emergency of international concern, highlighting the serious threat it poses.
While there are currently no known clade I monkeypox cases in the United States, the White House discussion aimed to prepare for any potential emergency. The government is committed to leading the global response and improving domestic preparedness to ensure rapid detection, containment, and management of any clade I monkeypox cases.
