European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to unveil the portfolios of her new Commission today, following lobbying efforts and the resignation of Thierry Breton, the current French commissioner. Von der Leyen will meet with leaders of the European Parliament political groups to announce the new Commission’s structure and country-specific portfolios.
There is speculation that Ireland’s Michael McGrath may receive the justice portfolio, though Ireland has pushed for an economic post. Last night, Taoiseach Simon Harris spoke with Von der Leyen and praised her meticulous work in forming the Commission.
The process faced hurdles, including a dispute over the Slovenian candidate and Breton’s dramatic resignation. France nominated Stéphane Séjourné to replace Breton, with concerns that Breton’s portfolio was being diluted. Séjourné is expected to hold a high-profile executive vice president position overseeing industrial policy and defence.
Despite challenges, Von der Leyen is working to finalize her Commission, emphasizing diversity and strategic placements within the team.
