The United States imposed new sanctions on Intellexa Consortium, a commercial spyware company led by former Israeli military officer Tal Dilian. The company’s Predator suite of spyware tools allowed unauthorized access to smartphones, enabling mass surveillance campaigns worldwide.
The penalties targeted five individuals and one organization connected to Intellexa, a Greece-based network with subsidiaries in various countries. The sanctions aim to deter the misuse of disruptive technologies that threaten national security and compromise citizens’ privacy and civil liberties.
The Biden administration previously sanctioned subsidiaries of Intellexa and its founder for the first time over spyware misuse. The measures restrict sanctioned individuals and entities from engaging in US-related business or financial transactions.
Amnesty International’s Security Lab found Predator spyware targeting high-profile figures, including European Parliament president and Taiwanese president. Moreover, Greece faced spyware incidents involving Intellexa, resulting in government officials’ resignations.
The US government’s actions illustrate a commitment to combatting the misuse of surveillance technologies and protecting individuals’ privacy from unauthorized intrusion.
