US fertilizer company Mosaic has decided to withdraw its request for higher tariffs on Moroccan fertilizer imports, signaling a shift in trade dynamics between the two countries. The Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) is awaiting the official announcement from US authorities regarding this decision.
The initial customs duties on Moroccan fertilizer imports were set at 19.95%, before being reduced to 7.42%. With OCP’s appeal progressing in the Court of International Trade, further reductions are expected. This move comes after Mosaic’s lobbying efforts to impose taxes on Moroccan phosphates faced opposition within the American agriculture industry.
As Mosaic backs down on its tariff increase request, the OCP Group, Morocco’s leading fertilizer producer, hopes for an end to the tariffs that hinder US farmers’ access to essential fertilizer supplies. The US Department of Commerce is working to lower duties on Moroccan phosphate fertilizers while increasing fees on imports from Russia, aiming to support American farmers in global markets.
