UN Debates Demanding End to Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territories
UN member states are in heated debates over a resolution pushed by the Palestinians demanding an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories within 12 months based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. This resolution faces fierce criticism from Israel.
The Palestinians, supported by Arab countries, called for a special session ahead of the General Assembly meeting. The draft resolution demands an end to the Israeli presence in the Palestinian territories within 12 months, contrasting the initial demand of six months.
While Israel firmly rejects the resolution as one-sided, the Palestinians emphasize the need for safety and security in their homes, urging the international community to pressure Israel for change.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the resolution as “inflammatory” and unhelpful for peace, highlighting the complexities of the Gaza situation due to the presence of Hamas.
The General Assembly’s support for Palestinian rights has been seen earlier in May, with a symbolic resolution for full Palestinian membership, as the Security Council remains paralyzed with US vetoes. The deadly conflict continues with casualties on both sides.
