UK PM pushes for mandatory Holocaust education in schools

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made a bold commitment to introduce mandatory lessons on the Holocaust in schools across England. At a dinner hosted by the Holocaust Educational Trust, Starmer emphasized the national importance of Holocaust education, stating that every student should have a thorough understanding of this critical part of history.

While Holocaust education is already included in the UK schools curriculum, not every school currently teaches it. Starmer announced a funding of £2.2 million towards the Lessons from Auschwitz project, which involves visits to the concentration camp in Poland for both teachers and students.

In addition to ensuring that the Holocaust remains on the curriculum, the prime minister declared that schools, even those not obligated to follow the national curriculum, will be required to teach about the Holocaust when the new curriculum is implemented.

Furthermore, Starmer confirmed plans to build a Holocaust memorial centre near parliament to honor the memory of the millions of victims killed by the Nazis during World War Two. This significant gesture demonstrates the government’s commitment to preserving the lessons and legacy of the Holocaust for future generations.
