The US Indo-Pacific Command chief, Samuel Paparo, emphasized the importance of the Mutual Defence Treaty between the US and the Philippines during a recent trip to Manila. Amid rising tensions in the South China Sea, both nations are exploring options for mutual defence and escort of vessels. Paparo stated that the US is prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with its ally in the event of escalating conflicts with China.
Recent clashes between the Philippines and China over strategic features like the Second Thomas Shoal and Sabina Shoal have highlighted the need for increased vigilance. The Philippine coastguard’s flagship vessel sustained damage in a collision with a Chinese vessel, raising concerns about Manila’s ability to patrol the region effectively.
The presence of over 203 Chinese militia and coastguard vessels in disputed waters is particularly alarming to Filipinos, underscoring China’s overwhelming force projection capabilities in the area.
