“This is the first known American-Israeli weapons manufacturer partnership to end at an American university since the war on Gaza began.”
The MIT Coalition for Palestine celebrated a victory as MIT discontinued ties with the MIT-Lockheed Martin Seed Fund, a partnership funding collaborations with universities in Israel. This decision, a result of sustained pressure from the Scientists Against Genocide movement, marked a significant divestment win.
The Coalition praised the end of the American-Israeli partnership, emphasizing the impact of student and scientist protests. The Lockheed Martin Seed Fund facilitated connections between MIT and Israeli offices of the arms manufacturer. Following months of advocacy, MIT announced the fund’s termination, stating it would not renew the contract.
This victory represents a step towards divestment from companies supporting violence, with Lockheed Martin being one of the world’s major arms producers selling weapons to Israel. The Coalition urged MIT to end ties with entities contributing to the conflict and acknowledged the collective effort in achieving this milestone.
As protests for Palestinian rights continue on campuses across the US, the success at MIT sets a precedent for future activism and change.
