In a recent report by Germany’s Bild, it was revealed that Berlin approved the sale of advanced artillery systems to Qatar in exchange for 12 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers to be transferred to Ukraine. The swap is part of a “ring exchange” program where donor countries provide weapons to Ukraine and receive new or upgraded replacements. The transfer of the PzH 2000s will strengthen Kyiv’s artillery capabilities while Qatar will enhance its defense forces with the RCH 155 artillery system.
The RCH 155 system boasts advanced features, high rates of fire, precision targeting, and long-range capabilities. It can fire precision-guided munitions at distances exceeding 40 kilometers. This exchange is not the first of its kind, as Germany has previously bought back hardware from Qatar. However, the sale to Qatar has stirred controversy due to concerns about Qatar’s support for Hamas and its stance on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Overall, this strategic realignment for Qatar marks a shift from its traditional neutral stance towards Ukraine. Other European countries, including France, the UK, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates, are also engaged in negotiations to provide support to Ukraine through similar “ring exchanges.”
