Jordan Launches Initiative to Reduce Greenhouse Gases

The Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has kicked off Jordan’s national strategy to decrease hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as part of the country’s efforts to combat climate change. This initiative, funded by the Montreal Multilateral Fund, targets a 54% reduction in HFC consumption by 2030, focusing on sectors like refrigeration and air conditioning.

The strategy was unveiled during Jordan’s observance of International Ozone Day on September 16, highlighting the country’s commitment to phasing out harmful greenhouse gases and transitioning to more sustainable alternatives. By adhering to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Climate Agreement, Jordan aims to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and play a vital role in global climate change mitigation.

UNIDO experts presented the first phase of the strategy, which includes converting industries to eco-friendly alternatives with the support of technical assistance. Jordan’s proactive stance in ratifying the Kigali Amendment has been praised, with UNIDO pledging to assist the country in meeting its environmental obligations.

Through collaboration with various sectors, Jordan is striving towards a greener and more sustainable future, demonstrating its dedication to fulfilling international environmental commitments while supporting economic growth.
