A devastating aftermath of Typhoon Yagi has hit Myanmar, with the death toll from massive flooding doubling to 226, according to state media. The UN predicts that as many as 630,000 people may need assistance due to the disaster.

The typhoon crossed several countries, causing floods and landslides that have claimed over 500 lives. Myanmar’s junta-ruled state TV confirmed 226 fatalities, with 77 people still missing. The floods also destroyed nearly 260,000 hectares of crops.

UNOCHA reported that an estimated 631,000 individuals were affected by the floods in Myanmar, emphasizing the urgent need for food, water, shelter, and clothing. Relief efforts have been hampered by blocked roads and damaged bridges.

Neighbouring countries like Thailand were also impacted, with hundreds of thousands forced to flee due to rising waters. In Vietnam, the death toll stands at 292 with significant damages to homes and crops.

Myanmar’s military, despite past restrictions on foreign aid, has issued an appeal for assistance. The UN has emphasized the urgent need for more resources to aid those affected by this natural disaster.
