Minister of State for Disabilities Anne Rabbitte has requested a briefing from the HSE following an RTÉ Investigates report that a disability charity is refusing to cooperate with a review into allegations of assault on a non-verbal female resident in one of its care homes.
The Ministry expressed concern over the reports, emphasizing the seriousness of abuse allegations and the importance of reporting such concerns. The parents of the woman, who complained to the HSE about bruising on her body and a disturbing incident involving another resident, fear she may have been assaulted while in the charity’s care.
Despite a review being initiated by the HSE in June 2023, the charity’s lack of engagement led to a pause in the process. The woman’s father expressed disappointment over the halt in the review, with the charity initially stating its full cooperation with external reviews but failing to address the HSE’s claims.
The Department stressed the importance of organizations cooperating with such investigations, especially when serving vulnerable citizens. The controversy highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the care of individuals with disabilities.
