Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has taken action against several Russian news networks, including RT. The decision comes after the US government claimed these outlets are linked to Russian espionage activities.
Meta announced on Monday that it would be banning these media outlets from its platforms globally in the following days, citing “foreign interference activity.” The US government had recently imposed sanctions on RT, accusing it of being a tool for Russian intelligence.
Russia has condemned the move, calling it an act of information warfare and suggesting it reflects the US’s inability to compete fairly in messaging. US officials have expressed frustration with RT’s role in spreading counter-narratives on global issues.
Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Meta has been cooperating with bans on RT in various Western countries. In response to Meta allowing hate speech exemptions, Russia labeled the company as extremist and banned Facebook and Instagram in the country.
