Meta, owner of Facebook, bans Russian state media within 80 characters

Meta, the owner of Facebook, is cracking down on Russian state media networks for alleged deceptive tactics and foreign interference activities. The bans on Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and related entities will be implemented soon. This move signifies a more aggressive approach by Meta towards Russian state media, following previous measures to limit their reach.

Russian state media has faced increased scrutiny for attempting to influence politics in Western countries. Meta’s decision to ban these networks comes amidst escalating tensions, with accusations of hidden Russian government messaging and covert operations to undermine democracy. The US has imposed new sanctions on RT, accusing it of being a tool of Russia’s intelligence apparatus.

Despite these measures, the Russian embassy in Washington, RT, and Rossiya Segodnya have not responded to requests for comment. Meta’s actions reflect a broader effort to combat misinformation and foreign interference on its platforms, as social media companies adapt to evolving geopolitical challenges.
