Manoj Verma Picked as Kolkata’s New Police Chief amid RG Kar Hospital Case Heat

Manoj Verma has been appointed as the new police commissioner of Kolkata, taking over from Vineet Goyal. Verma, an IPS officer of the 1998 batch, is known as a troubleshooter in the West Bengal police, having handled critical situations under both Left and Trinamool Congress administrations.

Verma’s experience in managing the Maoist challenge in Paschim Medinipur during the Left era and his role in handling tensions in Darjeeling and Barrackpore demonstrate his ability to deal with tough situations effectively. His appointment comes at a time when Kolkata police are facing scrutiny over the handling of a recent rape-murder case, indicating a need for strong leadership to restore the department’s image.

Having previously served in Kolkata police as DC (traffic), Verma’s familiarity with the city’s dynamics is expected to be an asset in his new role. Amidst discontent within the force following recent events, Verma’s appointment is seen as a move to boost morale and instill confidence among the police personnel.
