The Liberal Democrats’ Stance on Gaza and Arms Exports
The Liberal Democrat party of Britain made a bold statement at their annual conference in Brighton, passing a motion in favor of suspending arms exports to Israel and calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This motion, championed by British-Palestinian MP Layla Moran, received overwhelming support and also urged for diplomatic efforts to oust Hamas from Gaza.
Additionally, the party recognized Iran as an “existential threat” to western democracies and called for the proscription of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
While condemning Iran’s destabilizing actions in the region, the party emphasized a political and diplomatic solution to the Gaza crisis. They also backed more extensive restrictions on arms exports to Israel than those previously imposed by the Labour government.
The conference highlighted the party’s increased presence in parliament following the recent general election and reaffirmed its support for a ceasefire in Gaza and a suspension of arms sales to Israel.
