Exciting news from Baghdad! Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced in an exclusive interview with Bloomberg News that the date for the conclusion of the international coalition mission in Iraq will be revealed soon. Al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq is now stable and no longer affected by war, making the coalition’s presence unnecessary.
During a meeting with US representatives, Major Gen. Kevin Leahy and Ambassador Alina Romanowski, Al-Sudani discussed progress in technical discussions to conclude the mission and transition into bilateral ties with coalition member countries. The cooperation also includes exchanging knowledge and training with Iraqi security forces.
While pro-Iranian militias remain, Iraq currently hosts 2,500 US soldiers. Discussions to terminate the coalition’s operations began in January, with Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi visiting Washington in July to finalize the agreement.
The international coalition, with over 80 partners, was formed to combat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Although ISIS was defeated in 2017, Iraqi authorities continue security operations to eliminate remnants of the terrorist group.
