Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, recently sparked controversy with his comments regarding the treatment of Muslim minorities in India. Khamenei expressed concern over the suffering of Muslims in India, Myanmar, and Gaza, urging solidarity among the Islamic Ummah.
India strongly objected to Khamenei’s remarks, labeling them as “unacceptable” and “misinformation.” The Indian government pointed to its own record on minority rights, particularly in light of discrimination and violence faced by the country’s Muslim population.
Despite criticism from Iran, India and Iran maintain strong bilateral relations, with a recent 10-year contract signed to develop and operate the Iranian port of Chabahar. This port development project is significant for India as it provides a strategic route for transporting goods to Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asian countries, bypassing Pakistan’s ports.
Khamenei’s comments on the treatment of Muslims in India come amid ongoing human rights concerns in Iran, including reports of arbitrary killings, forced disappearances, and gender-based violence. The Iranian government’s crackdown on protests in 2022 raised international alarm over human rights violations in the country.
