Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze warned of further repercussions on U.S.-Georgian relations if more steps were taken, linking the sanctions to upcoming parliamentary elections. Critics accuse the ruling Georgian Dream party of aligning more closely with Russia and undermining Georgia’s pro-Western stance.
The U.S. condemned Georgia’s anti-democratic actions, including the law targeting NGOs, and announced visa restrictions on over 60 individuals for undermining democracy in the country. Despite an initial liberal pro-Western agenda, the Georgian Dream has shifted towards anti-Western and anti-liberal positions.
