European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen made a bold move by appointing women to many of the top roles in her new team, marking a significant step towards gender parity within the EU. Despite initial reluctance from some member states, von der Leyen appointed six women out of the eight top positions in her team, including Spanish Socialist Teresa Ribero to lead the green transition and serve as the competition and antitrust tsar.
In response to French heavyweight Thierry Breton’s resignation and criticism of von der Leyen’s governance, former Prime Minister Stephane Sejourne was given the industrial portfolio, solidifying France’s voice within the Commission. Many viewed Breton’s resignation as a strategic move by von der Leyen to quell internal criticism and assert her authority.
Von der Leyen’s efforts towards gender parity faced challenges as member states pushed back on her choices. Despite the resistance, her commitment to diversity and equal representation remained steadfast.
