Greece’s Apostolos Tzitzikostas has been appointed to the transport and tourism portfolio in the upcoming European Union executive, as announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The governor of Central Macedonia had been nominated for the position in early August.
Cyprus’ Costas Kadis has been named the commissioner for oceans and fisheries, while Spain’s Teresa Ribera will take on the role of the bloc’s next antitrust commissioner. Estonia’s Kaja Kallas will be responsible for foreign policy, and Lithuania’s Andrius Kubilius will become the EU’s first defense commissioner.
With a focus on prosperity, security, and democracy, the new Commission aims to promote competitiveness in the green transition and digitalization. Climate change remains a significant factor in their agenda, along with security and competitiveness, influenced by recent events such as the Russian war in Ukraine.
The EU Commissioners, including French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne and Slovakia’s Maros Sefcovic, will undergo hearings with European Parliament lawmakers for approval. The new Commission is expected to take office by the end of the year, navigating challenges such as the US presidential election outcomes and potential shifts in EU trade relations.
