Indian Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera announced on Monday that the Indian Congress-National Conference alliance aims to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s right to statehood. This comes as the Election Commission of India revealed that assembly elections in India-held J&K will take place from Sept 18 to Oct 1, marking a significant electoral event since the region’s reorganization in August 2019.
The widening of powers for the held J&K lieutenant governor by the Modi government was criticized by the opposition, who viewed it as disempowering the region’s people. Khera emphasized the importance of reinstating statehood for J&K, stating that Congress has a track record of fulfilling promises and that the alliance parties are the way to defeat BJP.
While the BJP government had repealed Article 370, removing occupied Kashmir’s special status in 2019, Khera questioned their ability to provide statehood after revoking it. Former foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry highlighted international consensus on the illegitimacy of India’s actions regarding J&K’s statehood.
