Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing the prospect of a double dissolution election if key government legislation remains stalled in the Senate. With three bills in limbo and unlikely to pass due to opposition from the Greens and the Coalition, Albanese has hinted at the possibility of a double dissolution. This move would see all parliamentary seats contested, rather than just half of the Senate.
One of the bills in question is the Nature Positive Act, which aims to establish an environmental regulator, Environment Protection Australia (EPA). However, both the Greens and the Coalition are blocking its passage, along with the Help To Buy scheme, designed to assist first-home buyers.
Albanese is urging the Senate to pass the legislation for the sake of homeownership and environmental protection. However, disagreements over amendments and other issues are hindering progress.
