In a recent survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), it was found that despite the challenges faced by Ukraine, the majority of Ukrainians (79%) expressed a strong desire to remain in their homeland even if they were given the option of US or EU citizenship.
In 2020, 28% of adult Ukrainians were willing to relocate abroad, but this number dropped to 7% in 2022 during a full-scale invasion, reflecting a resurgence in patriotism and optimism among the citizens. The latest survey in 2024 showed a slight increase to 19% of those willing to move abroad, yet the overwhelming majority still preferred to stay in Ukraine.
Interestingly, there was a rising trend of willingness to move abroad among all age groups and regions, although the preference to remain in Ukraine remained strong. Men and women aged 25-55, considered the mobilization age, showed a strong inclination to stay in Ukraine, with men at 70% and women at 80%.
Despite the challenging times and uncertainties, the survey reflects the unwavering attachment and commitment of Ukrainians to their country, reaffirming their resilience and determination to build a better future within their homeland.
