Ukrainian military forces reportedly used Neptun missiles to target Russian ammunition depots near the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol on Tuesday, September 17, according to Defence Express. The strikes, carried out by the Ukrainian Navy, destroyed military facilities less than 100 kilometers from the front line.
The attack signifies a potential increase in the production of Ukrainian missiles, highlighting both positive developments and a shortage of certain missile types. These strikes come after explosions in Mariupol, with a city official confirming hits on enemy ammunition depots and missile systems in the suburbs.
President Zelensky previously expressed the need for more ATACMS missiles to target Russian forces. The Neptun missile, developed by Ukrainian company KB Luch, was introduced in 2015 and added to the Ukrainian Navy’s arsenal in 2021. Weighing 870 kg with a length of 5.05 meters, the Neptun missile can target ships up to 9,000 tons with a range exceeding 200 kilometers, providing a versatile and effective defense solution for Ukraine’s military.
