The Swedish Defense Minister, Pal Jonson, announced the ambition for Sweden to become the framework nation for forward land forces in Finland during a joint press conference with Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen in Stockholm. He emphasized that this process is in its early stages, and the appointment of a leading nation will be determined collectively by NATO.
The decision to take on this role follows a major policy shift prompted by the outbreak of the Ukraine war in February 2022. Previously non-aligned in terms of military alliances, Finland and Sweden have now made the decision to join NATO in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
