Starmer promises migration partnership on Italy visit – Other media reports

UK Prime Minister Starmer has been focusing on renewing ties with European Union leaders, with a recent visit to Rome following trips to Berlin, Paris, and Dublin. During his visit, he discussed issues related to asylum seekers and organized immigration crime with Italian leaders.

Starmer has abandoned controversial plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, but is considering offshore processing agreements similar to Italy’s deal with Albania. The focus remains on tackling smuggling and trafficking gangs.

The UK government is increasing deportation flights to address the ongoing issue of migrants crossing the Channel, with a recent incident resulting in eight deaths. Starmer visited Italy’s National Coordination Centre for Migration to learn about their successful strategies in reducing irregular sea arrivals by 60%.

Additionally, defense matters, including the GCAP fighter jet project involving Italy and Japan, will be discussed with Italian leaders. Starmer has highlighted the importance of the program but has yet to confirm continued British participation.
