Stakeholders push for responsible battery recycling and sustainable sourcing

Stakeholders are taking action to reduce environmental pollution and health risks associated with improper battery collection and recycling in Nigeria. A workshop in Lagos, organized by NESREA and SRADev Nigeria, brought together NGOs, officials, experts, and companies to address the challenges of Used Lead Acid Battery recycling.

The PROBAMET project aims to promote responsible battery recycling and sustainable metal sourcing by building local capacities, enhancing data collection, and fostering a circular economy. Improper battery disposal can lead to severe health and environmental consequences, underscoring the importance of regulated collection and recycling practices.

NESREA has introduced regulations to ensure the environmentally sound management of batteries, with an emphasis on Extended Producer Responsibility. The workshop provided insight into Standard Operating Procedures for handling used batteries and encouraged collaboration to reduce risks associated with substandard recycling practices.

Anambra State is actively working to improve waste management and sustainability, seeking partnerships to safeguard the environment and stimulate economic growth through responsible recycling practices.

Overall, the workshop aims to improve environmental management practices and align with international standards to address the challenges posed by lead acid batteries in Nigeria.
