Springfield, Ohio has faced a wave of violent threats amid a political controversy over Haitian migrants, leading to the cancellation of its annual CultureFest event. The two-day celebration of diversity, arts, and culture was called off due to safety concerns following days of threats that forced the closure of schools and government offices.
City Manager Bryan Heck expressed regret over the cancellation, emphasizing the priority of residents’ safety. The city has been in the spotlight after false claims spread by former President Donald Trump and others, leading to a climate of fear and hostility towards Haitian immigrants.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has denounced the rumors and plans to address the situation in Springfield. President Joe Biden also condemned the spread of lies and hate, calling for an end to the mistreatment of immigrants.
Springfield has seen increased tension and threats targeting the Haitian community, leading to colleges holding virtual classes and evacuations of public buildings due to bomb threats. The influx of Haitian immigrants has created challenges in the city, impacting schools, healthcare, and housing costs.
