The DA has been critical of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Bill, fearing it could jeopardize the government of national unity (GNU). Despite this, the party has decided to remain in governance.
DA leader John Steenhuisen expressed concern that the president’s actions could harm the GNU and undermine the trust it was built on. However, following the bill’s signing, the DA announced it would stay in the GNU and challenge the law in court.
Steenhuisen emphasized that the DA would only consider leaving the GNU if the government posed a serious threat to the economy or constitution. He stressed the importance of finding common ground with the ANC for the benefit of South Africa.
Despite initial concerns, Steenhuisen reaffirmed his confidence in the GNU and highlighted the party’s collaborative efforts with the ANC on various policies. Ramaphosa also expressed commitment to preserving the governing bloc despite disagreements.
