Lawyers united on Monday to denounce the contentious Constitutional Package, specifically rejecting the establishment of a “federal constitutional court”. The package includes amendments to set the CJP’s tenure at three years and grants powers to transfer judges between courts.
The legislation, expected in Parliament, faced delay as the government sought support. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar clarified that the amendments hadn’t been presented to the cabinet or CCLC yet, as per procedure.
Signing a joint statement, lawyers criticized the package for lacking public mandate and undermining judiciary independence. They announced they wouldn’t acknowledge Justice Qazi Faez Isa as CJP post his term, backing Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah instead.
CJP Isa’s opposition to executive interference in judiciary appointments was highlighted, with lawyers refusing to recognize a “federal constitutional court” as well. Over 225 lawyers, including prominent names like Jibran Nasir and Imaan Mazari, have signed the statement.
