Kyiv invites UN, Red Cross to Ukraine areas in Russia’s Kursk Region

Ukraine has invited the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to observe the situation in areas of Russia’s Kursk region following their incursion last month. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga announced the invitation on social media, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to international humanitarian law.

Despite Russian denunciations of the offensive, more than 150,000 Russian civilians have been evacuated. The Ukrainian Defense Forces claim to be operating according to international humanitarian law during the incursion, distinguishing themselves from Russia’s occupation of eastern Ukraine.

As ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric visited Moscow to discuss various issues, three ICRC workers were killed in shelling in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported a counteroffensive in the Kursk region, recapturing several towns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the counteroffensive but maintained that Kyiv’s incursion was proceeding as planned.

The Moscow Times continues to face challenges as an “undesirable” organization, but their journalists remain committed to independent journalism in Russia and seek support to continue their important work.
