Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein to discuss the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon and the need for a “fundamental change” in the security situation. Displaced residents in the border area are unable to return home without improved security measures, according to Netanyahu.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also emphasized the dim prospects for a ceasefire with Hezbollah, citing the group’s ties to Hamas. The recent violence has resulted in casualties on both sides and forced thousands to flee their homes. Hochstein warned that a broader conflict in Lebanon could escalate into a regional crisis.
Despite efforts by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt to secure a truce in Gaza, no progress has been made in halting the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel. Hezbollah has expressed willingness to stand down if a Gaza ceasefire is reached, while Israel remains committed to removing militants from the border area.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet is facing internal tensions, with reports of potential dismissals, including Defense Minister Gallant. Netanyahu stressed the need for a change in the northern border situation, signaling a shift in policy.
