Three arrested over cannabis possession after evading border check
German police arrested three men traveling with hashish in the trunk of their car, as Berlin introduced new border checks.
The three evaded a checkpoint on the A30 highway near Bad Bentheim as they entered Lower Saxony from the Netherlands.
Despite crossing the border, they were stopped in Rheine, just 30 kilometers away in North Rhine-Westphalia.
All three are under investigation in connection with the cannabis haul.
New checks are now in place at border crossings with several countries, aiming to strengthen border control.
Germany starts checks at all land borders
German police have begun monitoring all land borders to crack down on irregular migration and crime, following recent extremist attacks.
Previously, only certain borders were checked, but now all land borders will be monitored for at least six months.
This includes crossings with neighboring countries like Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France.
Germany, being in the Schengen Area, aims to enhance security by extending border controls to all land borders.
