Flooding in central Europe has claimed the lives of at least 10 people and caused widespread destruction from Poland to Romania. Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, submerging towns and villages in water and debris.
In Poland, the government is set to declare a state of disaster as rescue efforts continue. The Czech Republic and Poland border areas were hit the hardest, with bridges collapsing and homes destroyed. In Romania, six people lost their lives due to the flooding.
The situation is dire in the Czech Republic, with cities like Litovel seeing 70% of its area underwater. More than 12,000 people have been evacuated, as Prime Minister Petr Fiala called for an emergency government session.
Despite efforts to combat the flooding, casualties continue to rise. Austria also witnessed a fatality, while Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria are preparing for further flooding as the River Danube rises.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with the affected regions and pledged EU support in this time of crisis.
