An innovative arms assistance initiative based in Copenhagen has significantly increased Ukraine’s production of the 2S22 Bohdana howitzer, utilizing funds from sequestered Russian Euros in Danish banks. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced that delivery of the howitzer has tripled, from six to eighteen systems per month. The Bohdana, developed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine following Russia’s 2014 invasion, features a NATO-standard 155mm gun and advanced fire control electronics.
With Danish-led funding, Ukraine aims to prioritize the production of artillery systems, particularly the Bohdana. Denmark became the first NATO nation to directly invest in Ukrainian weapons production. This move not only strengthens Ukraine’s defense capabilities but also reduces maintenance costs compared to Western-manufactured systems. The success in increasing Bohdana production is seen as a significant milestone, with plans for further support to Ukrainian arms manufacturing in the future.
The collaboration also highlights the importance of establishing regular production of NATO-standard shells, as Ukraine’s arms production continues to grow. Other nations, like Norway, are encouraged to follow Denmark’s lead in investing in Ukrainian arms production. This partnership demonstrates a unique approach to supporting Ukraine’s defense industry and strengthening its military capabilities.
