Central European floods cause more river overflows, death toll climbs

Devastating floods have hit northeastern Czech regional capital Ostrava, leading to the closure of a power plant supplying heat and hot water, as well as two chemical plants. The situation has prompted the evacuation of over 12,000 people, with reported casualties in the region.

In neighboring countries, the flooding has also taken a toll, with six deaths in Romania, one in Austria, and one in Poland. Efforts to combat the floods are ongoing, with thousands of emergency personnel involved in the operation.

As the River Danube continues to rise, preparations are being made in Slovakia and Hungary. In Austria, authorities are bracing for a second wave of heavy rain, despite a temporary respite in water levels.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed solidarity with those affected by the floods, assuring EU support. The situation remains critical as countries work to mitigate the impact of the natural disaster.
