Making Strides: A Black Woman’s Journey in Eastern German Politics

In the midst of election fervor in Cottbus, a city known for right-wing extremism, one striking image stands out – that of Adeline Abimnwi Awemo, a Black politician, with the message “Miteinander” (together). She represents the Christian Democrat Union (CDU) in the upcoming Brandenburg state parliament election against a backdrop of rising populist support in eastern Germany.

Despite facing challenges from far-right parties like AfD, Awemo remains undeterred, embracing her slogan of unity and optimism. Her recent encounter with racism while hanging posters underscores the city’s tensions, but also highlights the support she has garnered. Through her campaign, she aims to bridge divides and foster dialogue.

Having immigrated from Cameroon in 2002, Awemo found a sense of community in Cottbus and now seeks to give back by advocating for targeted migration policies. As a voice for inclusivity and progress, she navigates a political landscape fraught with anti-immigrant sentiments, hoping to reshape the narrative towards cooperation and growth.
