In a recent development in Bengaluru, the BBMP is set to construct 50 new Indira Canteens in the city. The state government, however, has rejected the request to assign the project to a private agency, leading the BBMP to issue tenders for the construction.
The government has approved to cover 50% of the construction cost, estimated at Rs 20 crore, as well as half of the maintenance expenses. The decision comes after the Urban Development Department issued orders based on state cabinet decisions earlier this month.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath had proposed awarding the project to Excel Precast Solution Pvt Ltd, which has experience in building similar canteens. However, the government has instructed the BBMP to follow the official tender process to select an agency.
The proposal to build 52 new canteens was first discussed in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with two already constructed at the Kempegowda International Airport. Currently, BBMP operates 177 Indira Canteens and 23 mobile canteens in the city.
