Fluctuating Prices in Abyei Markets Amidst Economic Challenges
The residents of Abyei are facing challenges with fluctuating prices of consumer commodities due to various economic factors. The recent increase in the value of the US dollar against the South Sudan Pound, the civil conflict in Sudan, and poor road infrastructure have all contributed to the unstable market conditions.
One resident, Kuk Chol, highlighted the rising prices of petrol and benzene, making it harder for people to afford essential items. However, there was some relief with a slight reduction in the exchange rate of the dollar, according to Juach Piout.
Abyei’s acting Information Minister, Deng Kiir, acknowledged the struggles faced by the residents and confirmed that food prices had slightly decreased. He also explained that the fuel prices had gone up due to restrictions on supply from the central government.
Despite these challenges, the community remains resilient and continues to adapt to the changing economic landscape in Abyei.
