Violence Erupts Among Illegal Miners in Papua New Guinea
Reports from a United Nations official have confirmed that between 20 to 50 individuals have lost their lives due to violent clashes among illegal miners in Papua New Guinea. The conflict, which began several days ago, is ongoing in the Porgera Valley, near the location of a devastating landslide in May that claimed the lives of over 2,000 people.
Mate Bagossy, the UN’s humanitarian adviser for Papua New Guinea, stated that the death toll reached at least 20 individuals as of Sunday, with the possibility of the number escalating to 50. He mentioned that the fighting is still ongoing and that security forces have been deployed to the region to address the situation.
Efforts are being made to mitigate further bloodshed and restore peace in the area. With the army and police forces now involved, the hope is that calm will soon be restored to the troubled region.
