September 16 marks the day in 1982 when thousands of Palestinians were brutally massacred at the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps in Lebanon; an atrocity seen as one of the most heinous in modern history.
After besieging and bombarding the area for days, the Israeli-backed Lebanese phalange militias attacked, killing at least 3,000 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians.
Over three days, and under the watch of Ariel Sharon’s army, the militias proceeded with their slaughter until international pressure forced Israel to stop them. The 1983 Kahan Commission found Sharon personally responsible for the massacre.
Despite condemnation from the UN General Assembly, Sharon later became Prime Minister of Israel. The ongoing genocide against Palestinians continues in Gaza, with thousands dead and wounded.
Israel faces international condemnation for its brutal offensive in Gaza, resulting in widespread death and displacement. The war has caused famine and a mass exodus of Palestinians, reminiscent of the 1948 Nakba.
