Assassination Plot Foiled in Venezuela

Venezuela made headlines over the weekend with the announcement of the arrest of six foreign nationals suspected of plotting to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed the arrests at a press conference in Caracas, revealing that the suspects were from the US, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

The group was allegedly planning to carry out violent acts against Maduro and within the country, with a stash of weapons seized during an intelligence operation. The Spanish nationals arrested were believed to have ties to Spain’s National Intelligence Center, although the Spanish government denied these claims.

The diplomatic tensions between Venezuela and Spain escalated following Spain’s support of opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez and criticisms of Maduro. As a result, diplomatic relations were strained, with the Venezuelan Foreign Minister recalling the ambassador to Madrid and calling for a severance of all ties with Spain.
