United Nations officials and humanitarian organizations have recently visited Maiduguri in response to the devastating floods that have affected the area. Led by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, the team arrived in Maiduguri to assess the impact of the Alau Dam flood disaster.
The team met with affected residents, government officials, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum. Fall commented on the situation, stating that the flood-affected people are facing a crisis within a crisis due to the floods occurring during a severe food insecurity and malnutrition crisis.
The delegation has promised immediate relief efforts to help displaced families, including providing food, clean water, sanitation facilities, and shelter. Many of those affected by the floods were already vulnerable due to being displaced multiple times by conflict and insecurity.
The director-general of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency reported that the number of people displaced by the flooding could reach one million, with at least 30 people confirmed dead by the National Emergency Management Agency.
