The Turkish government, in partnership with South Sudan, recently initiated the construction of a new prison in Juba. The project, costing US$30 million and spearheaded by MVG Construction and MADO Construction, will house 1,216 inmates and is set to be completed in 10 months at Kapuri in Luri Payam. This development aims to alleviate the overcrowding issues at Juba Central Prison, which currently holds over 3,000 inmates.
During the foundation laying ceremony, Central Equatoria State Governor, Gen Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani, emphasized the positive impact the new facility will have on the local community. Turkish Ambassador Erden Mutaf highlighted the scale of the project, with a total surface area of 1,500 square meters and a workforce of 300 South Sudanese.
The Central Equatoria State Director General of Prison Service, Lt Gen Juma Doka Legge, expressed gratitude to the Juba County Commissioner for allocating land for the new prison. The goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for inmates, fostering their development and eventual reintegration into society.
Overall, this collaborative effort between Turkey and South Sudan signifies a significant step towards improving the country’s correctional system and addressing issues of overcrowding in prisons.
