A Tragic Incident: Over 40 Farmers Drown in Boat Capsizing in Nigeria
Tragedy struck in northwest Nigeria as over 40 farmers are presumed dead after their wooden boat capsized on a river near Gummi town in Zamfara state. The overloaded boat, carrying more than 50 passengers, mostly farmers, overturned due to overcrowding beyond its capacity.
Authorities were able to rescue only 12 individuals shortly after the accident, with search efforts ongoing to recover the bodies of the remaining passengers. This incident highlights the perilous conditions faced by more than 900 farmers who depend on crossing the river daily to access their farmlands, with only two boats available.
Nigeria’s President expressed condolences for the farmers’ deaths and the impact of nearby floods that have forced over 10,000 people to flee. The region is also plagued by armed groups engaging in criminal activities.
Sadly, boat accidents are not uncommon on Nigeria’s waterways, often due to poor regulation and lack of safety measures. This recent tragedy adds to a string of incidents that have claimed the lives of farmers in neighboring states. Urgent measures are needed to prevent such heartbreaking accidents in the future.
